Sleep. Most of us enjoy it. We revel in it. Some of us longingly wait for the weekend to arrive so that we can sleep in later than normal. Getting a few extra zzz’s may make you feel good temporarily, but is it possible to get too much sleep?
It’s important to note that if you constantly are seeking additional sleep, this may be a symptom of a medical condition. These conditions can include depression, diabetes, heart disease, sleep apnea, and others. There is no conclusive evidence that oversleeping is causing these ailments; however, repeatedly feeling the need for extra sleep could be an indicator of a health-related issue lurking in the background. For this reason, if you consistently feel tired, you’ll want to check with your primary physician to make sure that there isn’t an underlying cause
If you do get more sleep than your body needs, you may end up feeling groggy or like you are in a drunk-like state. You may also have problems remembering things or other issues with cognitive functions. That’s why it’s important to determine what the right amount of sleep is for you, and to stick to a sleep schedule to obtain the right amount of sleep nightly.
What does all this mean? If you repeatedly oversleep, you aren’t necessarily harming yourself with the extra rest. But if you are oversleeping because you feel an incessant need for sleep, you need to talk to your doctor. The oversleeping could very-well be a symptom of an underlying problem, and you need to find out the reason behind it. After all, once you identify the problem, it will be easier to identify the solution.
